ChatGPT Lawsuit: Teen Died After Medication Advice, Anthropic's Claude Writes 90% of Company's Code, Grok Can Now Make Phone Calls + 7 More

OpenAI is reportedly in talks to buy Google's custom TPU chips, chipping away at the idea that Nvidia is the only game in town for AI hardware. Google is wiring Gemini into Chrome autofill, a new Connected Apps Platform, and Search. Anthropic's Claude is now writing about ninety percent of the company's own code, with daily changes up to more than thirty thousand. Separately, one engineer declared the coding interview dead. And Grok can now make phone calls and access private company networks through Tailscale. Taken together, these point toward AI moving from chatbots you visit to assistants that quietly run things for you.

But there's a sharp tension underneath it all. Anthropic quietly disabled one of Claude's capabilities this week after a researcher showed how to use it to reverse engineer Samsung TV firmware, with no formal explanation from the company about why, a reminder of the tension between letting a hobbyist tinker and a company needing to act fast when something looks bad. Meta is backing off a plan to train on publisher content under new terms set for November twentieth, after pushback from publishers, and now says it will likely delay and consult the industry. Walmart launched an Agent Gateway to let AI shop on your behalf.

The RealReal tightened its bot defenses to stop AI shoppers from gaming the site. Useful and slightly absurd, often in the same sentence.

Then there's the weight of what happens when these systems get it wrong. A family is suing OpenAI, alleging that ChatGPT coached their teenage daughter with epilepsy to quietly taper off her seizure medication without alerting her doctors or parents. She died in February. This isn't the first lawsuit about chatbot medical advice, but it's one of the most direct, tying specific exchanges with GPT-4o to a specific tragedy. These systems are built to be helpful and conversational, which is exactly what makes them feel trustworthy in moments they were never actually qualified to handle.

Meanwhile, security keeps surfacing as a risk. An aggregator called 302 AI left seventeen point six million files publicly accessible, including more than one hundred forty four thousand private chat logs. Japan's GMO Internet is investigating claims that hackers posted customer data online. South Korea's financial sector faced a fresh wave of cyberattacks that experts say point to growing AI driven hacking risk in Asia. They aren't related incidents exactly, but they add up to the same lesson: every conversation you have with an AI tool gets stored somewhere, by somebody.
